Healthy diet importance for the elderly people.

Title: Healthy diet importance for the elderly people.

As you become older, the foods and drinks that make up a healthy diet for you may be slightly different from when you were younger. You’ll need less of some foods and more of others. But as you get older, it's important you continue to eat well. Good nutrition is necessary for all ages but it is even more essential for the elderly people. It gives you energy and can help you control your weight. It may also help prevent some diseases, which are much more characteristic for the people of advanced age, such as osteoporosis, high blood pressure, heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and certain cancers, A healthy diet can also boost energy levels and reduce fatigue, improve mood and cognitive function. You also need to be aware of your own specific nutrition requirements and adjust your food choices so your body gets exactly what it needs for good health in older age.

For example, when you are not exercising much (and majority of the elderly people practically don’t exercise or exercise a little) you may experience muscle loss, which can increase your risk of falls and broken bones. Aged people with poor nutrition, including malnutrition, are at greater risk and severity of pressure injuries, loss of bone and muscle mass/strength, frailty, reduced functional capacity. One of the acute problem for the old-aged people is osteoporosis. Osteoporosis is a bone disease that develops when bone mineral density and bone mass decreases or when the quality or structure of bone changes. This can lead to decrease in bone strength that can increase the risk of broken bones (fractures). Easy to understand that broken bones make life much less comfortable. Protein is essential for building, repairing, and maintaining healthy bones and muscles. To decrease the risk of broken bones your diet should indispensably include the sources of protein. And it is only an example how is the diet important for the people in this age group.

It’s normal to experience challenges with your physical health as you age. Let us mention  few of the most common health issues experienced by older adults. Cardiovascular disease remains the most common cause of death of older adults. As you get older your cardiovascular system goes through changes. Your blood vessels and arteries may start to stiffen, causing your heart to work harder to pump blood. Changes that happen in  bones, joints, and muscles. We have already mention this problem. As you age, your bones shrink and become less dense. This makes them weaker and more likely to fracture if you become injured. Muscles also lose strength, flexibility, and endurance. Changes that happen in digestive system. You can also expect your digestive system to change as you age, especially in your large intestine. This can lead to increased instances of constipation.

What is common for all mentioned problems? If it is impossible to prevent appearance of these problems completely with the person ageing but it is possible to push their appearance to the later age and make them less painful. And the proper food is one of the key components for these preventive actions. I dare repeat that without good food and drink choices, you’re at greater risk of chronic diseases, such as cardiovascular diseasetype 2 diabetes, some cancers, and even mental health issues, such as anxiety and depression.
